The Holidays won’t be the same without hot chocolate filled nights by the Christmas tree. You will find everyone loves their hot chocolate a different way. But, this universally comforting and decadent drink is always a hit from the kids to the adults.
There are of course many different recipes all over the web because everyone has a preference when it comes to hot chocolate. For this recipe, we are using a combination of dark and milk chocolate. I think using a combination makes the perfect balance of rich and sweet.

I have never been a huge fan of powder hot chocolate mixes. They just don’t do the trick for me. Not to mention they are most likely full of crap you shouldn’t be putting in your body. Hot chocolate should always be made with real chocolate. And if you can’t get your hands on great chocolate chunks, go with real cocoa powder and add your own ingredients to it (i.e milk, spices…etc).
Spiced Hot Chocolate

This spiced hot chocolate is so easy to make, yet it is so decadent and delicious. It is the perfect way to bring the family together during the holiday or cold winter months. It’s also very customizable. Don’t like dark chocolate, use only milk chocolate and vice-versa.
One thing that is very important with this recipe is to make sure you don’t bring the milk to a boil at all. Especially if you are using dairy-free milk. You want to steam the milk not boil it. Bringing the milk to a boil too fast will only curdle the milk. So it’s important to make sure you heat the milk slowly over medium-low heat.

Description
a rich and decadent treat. Chocolate chunks melted in steamed milk with warm spices and served with roasted marshmallows.
Ingredients
1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
1 cup evaporated milk
2 tbsp coconut sugar
1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
2 ounces good milk chocolate
2 ounces 85% cacao dark chocolate
A pinch of sea salt
1.5 ounces good bourbon (optional)
marshmallows to serve
Instructions
To begin, pour the almond milk, evaporated milk and coconut sugar into a saucepan and heat the milk over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Now, whisk in the cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate and sea salt. Continue to whisk the mixture until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Turn the heat down to low in order to keep the hot chocolate mixture heated through while you roast the marshmallows.
Now, transfer the marshmallows to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and put it under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the marshmallows are brown (make sure you keep an eye on the marshmallows, they will brown very quickly). You can also roast your marshmallows over your gas stove.
IF you’re adding bourbon, this is the point where you can add it. Remove the hot chocolate from the heat and whisk in the bourbon to combine.
Pour the hot chocolate into the mugs and finish with the roasted marshmallows. Enjoy!
