Every summer party or celebration needs some fabulous wings. My chili garlic chicken wings are exactly the phenomenon you’ve been looking for. It’s perfect for all your summer celebrations and it also makes for the perfect game day food. I think it’s very fitting that this is the first recipe for wings I’ve ever shared because it’s one you’re going to keep making over and over again.
Ok so let’s talk about the marinade for these wings. I recommend marinating them overnight because you will get the most flavor throughout the wings. But, if you are strapped for time, you can marinate them for 2-4 hours.

The marinade is a little sweet and a little spicy with the combination of spicy harissa sauce and coconut aminos along with other spices. You can also purchase mild harissa sauce if you are not a fan of spicy food or if you are cooking for children.
If you can’t find harissa sauce, I recommend substituting with chili garlic sauce or Sambel oelek. With that substitution, the wings may not have the same spice profile compared to using harissa sauce. But they will still be packed with flavor.

Can I prep these wings and freeze them?
Yes! Absolutely! Simply whisk the ingredients for the marinade together and transfer it into a freezer friendly ziplock bag. Add the wings and massage the bag to make sure the wings are well coated with the marinade. Close the bag and make sure you squeeze out as much air from the bag as possible. Freeze for up to 2 months.
You can thaw the chicken in the fridge overnight and then cook them.
Now, you can cook your wings in a few different ways:

- In the air fryer at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
- In the oven 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
- Or, on a outdoor grill preheated to medium heat for 20-25 minutes (perfect during that 4th of July celebration)!
What goes with Chili Garlic Chicken Wings?

Are you serving these wings for dinner or bringing them to a party? Either way, you should always have some delicious sides to go with your wings.
- Broccoli slaw (just make the slaw and serve it along with the chicken wings
- Easy vegetable Stir Fry
- Crispy Potato Wedges
- Slow cooker Garlic and Herb Potatoes

Chili Garlic Chicken Wings
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Cook Time: 20 mins
- Total Time: 30 mins
- Yield: 6 1x
Description
Chicken wings marinated in spicy chili garlic sauce and coconut aminos. Then cooked in the air fryer and served with marinated scallions. Keto and Whole30 friendly.
Ingredients
1/2 tsp. Sesame seeds
1 tsp. sesame oil
2 tbsp. avocado oil
3 tbsp. Coconut aminos
3 tbsp. Spicy Harissa sauce or chili garlic sauce
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp grated ginger
2 lbs. chicken wings
MARINATED SCALLIONS:
2 scallions (finely chopped)
2 garlic cloves, finely minced
2 tsp. grated ginger
2 tsp. lime juice
1 tsp. coconut aminos
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
Instructions
First, whisk together the sesame seeds, sesame oil, avocado oil, coconut aminos, harissa, salt and ginger in a large mixing bowl. Add the chicken and use your hands to toss it around to make sure it’s well coated with the marinade. Cover the bowl and transfer it to the fridge. Let the chicken marinate for 4 hours to overnight.
Now, spray your air fryer basket with some avocado oil spray (or just rub some avocado oil on the bottom of the basket). Remove the chicken wings directly from the marinade and place them in the air fryer basket about 1/2 an inch apart in a single layer. Spray the wings with a little more avocado oil spray. Set the air fryer to “wings or chicken” at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Let the wings cook for 10 minutes, then flip them and continue to cook for the remaining 10 minutes.
*You may need to cook them in 2 batches if your air fryer isn’t large enough to cook the wings in a single layer.
While the second batch of wings cook, stir all the ingredients needed for the marinated scallions together and set them aside.
Remove the wings from the air fryer and scatter the marinated scallions on top of the wings. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
IN THE OVEN:
Preheat the oven to 400˚F. Place a cooling rack on a large baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Arrange the chicken wings on the cooling rack in a single layer. Bake the chicken for 35-40 minutes or until it’s crispy and cooked through (flip the wings half way through the cooking time). Remove the chicken from the oven, scatter the marinated scallions on top and serve immediately.
ON THE GRILL:
Preheat your outdoor grill to medium heat. Cook the wings on the preheated grill, turning occasionally, until the chicken is browned and no longer pink, about 20-25 minutes. Remove the chicken from the grill and scatter the marinated scallions on top. Serve immediately.

What about people that have to.make everything from scratch? I don’t have access to harissa powder, and even if i did, it would be prolly full of crap, like a lot of sauces and condiments are here in the uk.
I have access to harissa powder though.
Delicious and easy!!

I need an education! What are coconut amigos and where does one buy them? If I can’t find it in my grocery store or area, can I delete it without affecting the flavor? What can I sub, please? Your wings look amazing, I love a little char on my grilled meats; makes a huge diff in flavor! Thanks!
Hi Donna, coconut aminos is a healthier substitute for soy sauce. It can usually be found next to soy sauce in the grocery store. Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Kruger, Publix…etc all have coconut aminos. You can also purchase online, amazon is a great option.
Hello love, i’m giving you 5 stars because i love your sauce…can you recommend a harissa sauce i can buy cheaper no sugar,…many thanks..uk…x

Hi Ruby! Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it! The only store bought harissa I use is the Mina Harissa. I have a harissa paste/sauce recipe in my upcoming cookbook which is coming very soon so you will be able to make No sugar added harissa at home.

I love wings, but have never successfully made wings I love at home…until I found this recipe! I was a little concerned the flavor wouldn’t come through since these wings aren’t tossed in sauce (I love saucy wings) – never fear, the marinade did it’s magic in 4 hours and the flavor was SO DANG GOOD! The marinated scallions are the perfect topping to add a little zest and brightness. If you’re a weirdo like my husband who doesn’t enjoy tangy, bright flavors – you can skip the scallion scatter and still happily devour.
Thank you Charlotte for this masterpiece! .

Thank you so much Karissa! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! My brother doesn’t like the extra tang from the scallion scatter either. But we still love them. We will keep trying to upgrade their palates lol.
Oh goodness, I am OBSESSED with this recipe! I halved it and used on 1 lb of chicken thighs so I could chop up leftovers for salads – so easy and soooo good!
